<image:caption>The programme started with sixteen students, who were regular absentees from school. Although starting out as weekly one-hour sessions, the kaupapa became so popular that students were returning daily to complete their whakairo mahi. As Toko states, “Whakairo became the reason they came to school. But through their work they also improved their numeracy and literacy skills. This gave them confidence to go back to their other classes, which helped restore their relationships with their other teachers too.” Whakairo classes are now offered as a full-year subject to years 9 to 13, with NCEA curriculum delivery in levels 1, 2 & 3.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In addition, the Rise+Shine Foundation also supported Trident High School Kapa Haka, who placed 2nd at the Maatatua Secondary School Regionals. This meant they had qualified for nationals for the first time in over 16 years. “Our success in Kapa Haka has really raised the profile for our Māori students. It’s shown them they can achieve anything they want to.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>Harley Wall, board member for the Pacific Cup Sports Trust, says: “The primary purpose of Pacific Cup was never about who won or lost. It was about bringing our people together in a festival atmosphere centered around sport. It encompasses so much of what we love about being Pasifika.” The representative pathways in touch can be expensive and out of reach for our Māori and Pasifika people. We wanted to change that, and as such, the Pacific Cup was born.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>“All five of our nations are immensely grateful for this support. It goes a long way to removing barriers for our tamariki to have fun and represent their culture at the Pacific Cup. The connection to the foundation for us is special. Josiah represented Samoa with pride in 2019, and alongside his aiga, contributed to what we love today. A tournament for us, by us – inspired by what’s possible.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Rise+Shine Josiah Mika Foundation provided warm winter gear for two tamariki teams, and their coaches and managers. The gesture was received with love, according to Khoury. “It was quite emotional, for us… because of the connection to Josiah and his family. This was his team and these kids have been together for a while. The hoodies also had Josiah’s name on them which was a nice reminder that he is always with us.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Rise+Shine Josiah Mika Foundation worked with Full Circle to alleviate costs for participation, a gesture that Horlock notes was “a gamechanger”; “Touch can be an expensive sport, particularly for those whānau with multiple tamariki participating, so we were extremely grateful that with the support of the Foundation we were able pay for our Junior and Development whānau fees” “The koha was given and received with aroha and enabled our Junior and Development whānau to participate to their fullest and without restrictions in our local competition with the FC Juniors finishing the season unbeaten in their respective grade. The parents of our Junior and Development whānau were extremely appreciative”</image:caption>

<image:title>Continuing Taniela’s Legacy</image:title>
<image:caption>Following a call from the Pacific Players Association, the Josiah Mika Rise & Shine Foundation was blessed with the opportunity to reinforce the love the Pasifika community has for Taniela and his family – and ensure they knew support was here for them. All Black great Pita Alatini was part of a special shopping trip, that saw Kava, Peni and Tevita head into Rebel Sport and leave with everything they needed to set them up nicely for the immediate future. All three boys received grants to purchase warm winter clothing & training gear, in an effort to alleviate pressure for their family at home and support their endeavours in school and sport.</image:caption>

<image:title>Brown Pride - Empowering the Next Generation of Community Leaders</image:title>
<image:caption>What began as casual training sessions among mates quickly evolved. After leaving school, the group noticed that the only time they caught up was either to train or to go out—and the latter wasn’t adding much value to their lives. Wanting something more purposeful, they explored personal training courses, became qualified, and began running training camps at their former school. The training camps, six-week fitness and wellbeing journeys, were just the beginning. Brown Pride now operates from a thriving gym space with over 100 active members, a barbershop, music studio, and even a merch room. Their vision is to offer more than temporary fixes, to build consistent, community-led solutions for long-term wellbeing.</image:caption>

<image:title>Brown Pride - Empowering the Next Generation of Community Leaders</image:title>
<image:caption>Johnnie shared gratitude for the support received “The initial funding helped us pilot some youth programmes that we’ve now further established and continue to run to this day. But what Jerome has done for our team outweighs any type of funding. He’s always been there, showing up like an older uso, willing to guide us and connect us to the right people. As newcomers to the business world and community space, it’s easy to lose track of the goal and our values. But with the kind of support the Josiah Mika Foundation has shown us, we’ve stayed loyal to the soil and true to our purpose. We owe a lot of that to Jerome and his assurance that when you ensure “the people will always come first,” everything will be alright. Thank you to the Josiah Mika Foundation and the Mika aiga”.</image:caption>
